The "Rebun-kinbai-so" (Trollius rebunensis) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species of Rebun Island in northern Hokkaido. It grows in coastal grasslands at around 200 m elevation, reaching a height of 30 to 80 cm. The stem is erect, either unbranched or branching once at the base. The leaves are trifoliate compound leaves, kidney-shaped, and have coarse serrations along the margins. From June to July, it produces orange-yellow, ball-shaped flowers at the stem apex. The flowers measure 4-5.5 cm in diameter; the parts appearing as petals are actually sepals. There are 7-13 sepals, broadly obovate to obovate in shape. The parts resembling stamens inside the corolla are petals, somewhat fleshy, numbering 11-12.
Taxonomic confusion exists regarding this species; it has been classified as the continental Asian species "Oku-kinbai-so" (Trollius ledebourii) or listed as a synonym of Trollius teshioensis. However, following "A Revision of the Genus Trollius (Ranunculaceae) in Japan 2016" by Yuichi Kadota of the National Museum of Nature and Science, it is treated here as an undescribed species belonging to the Far Eastern Asian section Insulaetrollius Drosz.
