アメリカの東部、ニューハンプシャー州以南からジョージア州・アラバマ州にかけて分布しています。落葉樹林や森林地帯、渓流沿いなどに生え、高さは１２０センチほどになります。葉は渋い緑色で卵形、枝先に互生します。春、葉の展開の少し前に、淡いピンク色から紫色の花を大きな房状に咲かせます。果実は長楕円形の蒴果で、上向きの毛が生えます。植物全体が有毒です。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Rhododendron periclymenoides。英名は Pink azalea、Pinxterflower。

The pink azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to the eastern United States, and distributed southward from New Hampshire to Geogia and Alabama. This shrub grows in deciduous forests or woodlands, along streams, and can reach about 120 cm in height. The leaves are dull green above, ovate and arranged alternately at twig tips. The light pink to violet flowers bloom in large clusters just before the leaves in mid-spring. The fruits are oblong capsules with ascending hairs. All parts of the plant are toxic.
