The Rhododendron zeylanicum belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Sri Lanka. It grows in temperate forests at elevations of 1800 to 2400 m, reaching heights of 5 to 20 m. The trunk is thick, usually twisted, with thick, dark gray bark deeply fissured. The leaves are elliptic to ovate, thick and very stiff, with strongly revolute margins. Leaves cluster densely at the tips of twigs. The underside of the leaves is covered with yellow or rust-colored wooly hair. From April to May, deep crimson flowers bloom at the branch tips.
