「エラチオールベゴニア」とも呼ばれています。球根ベゴニアとクリスマスベゴニアを交配して生まれた品種です。１９５５年にドイツの育種家オットー・リーゲル氏によって育成されました。もともとは短日性の植物なので秋から冬咲きですが、今では開花調節によってほとんど一年中出回っています。花色は赤色、ピンク色、黄色、白色などで覆輪もあります。

シュウカイドウ科シュウカイドウ属の多年草で、学名は Begonia x hiemalis。英名は Rieger begonia、Elatior begonia。

Rieger begonia (Begonia x hiemalis) belongs to the Begoniaceae (the Begonia family). It is also called Elatior begonia. It is a perennail herb that is a hybrid between Tuberous begonia and Christmas begonia. It was first bred by German breeder Otto Rieger in 1955. This begonia is naturally short-day plant and bloom in fall and winter. Though it comes on to market through the year in manner of flowering regulation. There are many flower-colors, such as red, pink, yellow, white and marginal variegation.
