ヨーロッパ原産のブルボスム種の園芸品種です。桿の基部の節間がこぶ状に肥大します。高さは３０センチほどで、幅１センチほどの線形の葉が叢生します。葉には細く白条が入ります。夏、長さ１０〜２０センチほどの円錐花序をだし、目立たない淡緑色の花を咲かせます。高温多湿には弱く、気温が高すぎると開花しません。ちなみに、名前は和製英語です。

イネ科オオカニツリ属の多年草で、学名は Arrhenatherum elatius ssp. bulbosum cv. Variegatum。英名は Variegated oat grass、Variegated bulbous oat grass。

The variegated oat grass (Arrhenatherum elatius ssp. bulbosum cv. Variegatum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is a cultivar of the "Bulbous oat grass" native to Europe. The internodes at the base of the rod enlarge like a hump. The height is about 30 cm, and linear leaves about 1 cm wide are crowded. The leaves have thin white stripes. In summer, it produces panicles about 10 to 20 cm in length and blooms inconspicuous pale green flowers. It is vulnerable to high temperature and humidity and will not bloom if the temperature is too high. By the way, the "Ribbon grass" is Japanese English.
