名前のように「ブロッコリー」ではなく、むしろ「カリフラワー」に分類される属性をもつ野菜です。「ブロッコリー」よりも大きく、成長すると高さは９０センチほどになります。この花菜は、１６世紀にイタリアやドイツで育種されました。花蕾は黄緑色で、ひとつの自然のフラクタル図形、部分と全体が自己相似という配置になっています。ふつうの「ブロッコリー」や「カリフラワー」に比べてマイルドな風味で、苦みが少なくよりクリーミイです。

アブラナ科アブラナ属の一年草で、学名は Brassica oleracea var. botrytis f. botrytis。英名は Romanesco broccoli、Roman cauliflower。

The Romanesco broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis f. botrytis) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is an annual herb that is not really a true broccoli, it's more properly classified as a cauliflower. The herb is much larger than a broccoli, about 90 cm in height when mature. This flower vegetable was breeded in Italy and Germany in the 16th century. The curds are yellow-green and arranged a natural fractal; self-similar pattern continues at several smaller levels. It has a milder flavor, more creamy and less bitter, than conventional broccoli or cauliflower.
