ヨーロッパの中部から南部、それにトルコやコーカサス地方が原産です。高さは2メートル以上になり、茎は棘や腺質の剛毛に被われます。葉は羽状複葉で、青みがかった緑色の3〜7個の小葉がつきます。花は一重の5弁花で、芳香があり濃いピンク色をしています。多くの園芸品種が作出され、ガリカ系(ガリカローズ)と呼ばれます。
バラ科バラ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Rosa gallica。英名は Gallic rose、French rose。
The Gallic rose (Rosa gallica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to central and southern Europe eastwards to Turkey and Caucasus. This shrub can reach up to 2 m in height, and the stems are covered with prickles and glandular bristles. The leaves are pinnate compound with 3-7 bluish-green leaflets. The flowers are single with 5 petals, fragrant and deep pink. Many cultivars have been beeded and called 'Gallica group rose'.
