ろうばい (蝋梅)

中国の中部が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の終わりに渡来しました。名前は、蝋細工のような花を咲かせることから。高さは４メートルほどになり、卵形の葉は対生します。１月から２月ごろ、葉が展開する前に淡黄色の花を咲かせます。外側の花被片は淡黄色、内側は紫褐色です。 |

ロウバイ科ロウバイ属の落葉低木で、学名は Chimonanthus praecox。英名は Wintersweet。 |

The Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) belongs to Chimonanthus (the Wintersweet family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to central China. This tree was introduced into Japan in the last days of Edo Era (about 150 years ago). It can reach about 4 m in height. Leaves are ovate abd oppposite. Ceroplastics-like pale yellow flowers come from January to February before foliation. The tepal is pale yellow on outside, purplish brown on inside. |
