アメリカの中南部が原産です。茎は直立し、高さは７５〜１５０センチになります。茎や葉には粗い毛が生えます。葉は披針形で、下部の葉には長い葉柄がつきます。７月から１０月ごろ、黄色い頭花を咲かせます。頭花には８〜１２個の舌状花があり、下垂します。筒状花は円錐形で、２〜３センチの高さがあり、灰緑色をしています。花が成熟すると褐色に変化します。

キク科オオハンゴンソウ属の多年草で、学名は Rudbeckia grandiflora。英名は Rough coneflower、Tall coneflower。

The Rough coneflower (Rudbeckia grandiflora) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the central-south parts of the United States. The stem is erect and can reach 75-150 cm in height. The stems and leaves have rough hairs. The leaves are lanceolate and the bottom ones have long petioles. It bears yellow flower-heads from July to September. The flower-heads have 8-12 drooping ray flowers. The cones are 2-3 cm high, gray-green, but turning brown as the flowers mature.
