アメリカの東部から中西部に分布しています。疎らな林内や野原に生え、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。全体に細毛に被われ、葉は卵状楕円形で互生します。葉縁には疎らな鋸歯があるかほとんど全縁です。下部の葉には、３裂するものがあります。６月から１０月ごろ、枝先に直径５センチほどの黄色い頭花を咲かせます。舌状花はふつう８個あり、管状花は褐色で球状につきます。
写真上・中１〜８は、園芸品種の「タカオ（cv. Takao）」。

キク科オオハンゴンソウ属の二年草で、学名は Rudbeckia triloba。英名は Brown-eyed Susan。

The Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is native to the eastern and midwestern United States. This herb grows in thin forests and fields, and can reach about 1.5 m in height. The whole plants are covered with fine hairs, the leaves are ovate-elliptic and arranged in alternate. The leaves are sparse serrate or almost entire. The underneath leaves are sometimes trilobate.The yellow, about 3 cm across flower-heads bloom on the terminal branches from June to October. The flower-head has usually 8 ray flowers and brown spherical tubular flowers. The upper 9 photos are a cultivar 'Takao'.
