メキシコ中部、おそらくメキシコ湾西岸のベラクルス州が原産です。高さは１５〜３０センチになります。茎は地面を這って広がり、節から根をだします。葉は披針形で対生し、ベルベットのような毛に被われています。春から秋にかけて、青紫色の筒状花を咲かせます。花冠の先端は５深裂し、表面にはしわがよります。一日花です。和名では、「けぶかるいらそう（毛深るいら草）」と呼ばれます。

キツネノマゴ科ルイラソウ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Ruellia squarrosa。英名は Water bluebell。

The Water bluebell (Ruellia squarrosa) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Ruellia family). It is an evergreen shrub that is probably native to central Mexico, Veracruz where situated on the west coast of the Gulf of Mexico. This shrub can reach 15-30 cm in height. The stems spread on the ground and bear fibrils at the nodes. The leaves are lanceolate, opposite and covered with velvety hairs. The bluish-purple tubular flowers bloom from spring to fall. The corolla is quintuple-partite at the tips with wrinkled surfaces. The flowers last one day.
