熱帯アメリカが原産です。わが国へは、江戸時代の初めに渡来しました。蔓性で他の草木などに絡みつき、長さは４．５〜６メートルになります。葉は羽状に細かく深裂します。夏から秋にかけて、星形の赤い花を咲かせます。

ヒルガオ科ルコウソウ属の多年草で、学名は Quamoclit pennata。英名は Cypress vine。

The Cypress vine (Quamoclit pennata) belongs to Convolvulaceae (the Morning glory family). It is a perennial herb that is native to tropical America. It was introduced into Japan at the beginning of the Edo period (1603-1867). It is vine and entwined with other vegetation, and its length is 4.5 to 6 m. The leaves are finely split like feathers. The star-shaped red flowers come in summer and fall.
