ヨーロッパ南東部から小アジアに分布しています。落葉樹林や雑木林の林床に生え、高さは４５センチほどになります。葉は退化していて花序の基部の小さな苞葉になり、葉のように見えるのは「葉状茎」と呼ばれる、扁平になった末端の茎です。夏に小さな黄色い花を、「葉状茎」の上に咲かせます。雌雄異株で、雄花と雌花は別々の株につきます。果実は球形の赤い液果で、まれにできます。属名は、「なぎ（梛）」の葉に似たところに「はないかだ（花筏）」のように花が咲くところからです。

The Spineless butcher's broom (Ruscus hypoglossum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from southeastern Europe to Asia Minor. It grows on the forest floor in deciduous forests and thickets, and is about 45 cm tall. The leaves are degenerated into small bract leaves at the base of the inflorescence, and what looks like leaves is a flattened terminal stalk, called a "phylloclade". Small yellow flowers bloom in summer on the "phylloclade". It is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a spherical red berry that is rarely produced. The Japanese genus name comes from the fact that the flowers bloom like a "hanaikada" (Japan helwingia) on a leaf similar to that of a "nagi".
