メキシコから中央アメリカ、それにキューバに分布しています。標高１８００メートルまでの山地に生え、高さは９０〜１８０センチになります。葉は卵形で、霜で枯死しますが夏には蘇ります。輪生状の花序をつけ、濃赤色の筒状花を咲かせます。ハミングバードの蜜源です。葉は、発熱のときのハーブティーの利用されてきました。

ゴマノハグサ科ルッセリア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Russelia sarmentosa。英名は Red rocket、Leafy coral blow。

The Red rocket (Russelia sarmentosa) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial evergreen herb that is distributed from Mexico to Central America and Cuba. This herb grows in mountains up to 1800 m above sea level and can reach 90-180 cm in height. The leaves are ovate and die of frost but reappear in summer. It bears whorled inflorescences on the stems and blooms dark red tubular flowers. The flowers are the source of honey for hummingbird. The leaves have been used for herbal teas during fever.
