The Assam indigo (Strobilanthes cusia) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Ruellia family). It is a shrub that is distributed southward from the Ryukyu Islands in Japan to Taiwan, southeast China, the Indochina Peninsula and India. This shrub can reach 1.5-1.8 m in height. The leaves are ovate and often drooping. The magenta bell-shaped flowers bloom from November to December. The leaves are used as a substitute for indigo. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "馬藍", and "板藍" (ban lan) in Chinese.
