インドから東南アジア、中国南部が原産です。高さは１２メートルほどになります。葉は偶数羽状複葉で互生します。花は黄白色で、直径２．５センチほどの球形の果実がなります。果肉はゼリー状で白く、生食や加工品に利用されます。「れいし（茘枝）」と似ていますが、果実は小さく、品種改良も進んでいません。材は赤褐色で硬く、建築や装飾用に利用されます。

ムクロジ科リュウガン属の常緑高木で、学名は Dimocarpus longan。英名は Longan、Lungan、Dragon eye。

The Longan (Dimocarpus longan) belongs to Sapindaceae (the Soapberry family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is originated from India to Southeast Asia and southern China. This tree grows up about 12 m. The leaves are impari-pinnate and alternating. The flowers are yellowish white and the fruits are spherical about 2.5 cm in diameter. The pulp is white in jelly and is used for raw foods and processed goods. It is similar to Lychee (Litchi chinensis), but the fruit is small and has not improved the variety. The timber is reddish brown and hard, it is used for building and decoration.
