The "Ryukyu-gashiwa" (Cynanchum liukiuense) belongs to Asclepiadaceae (the Milkweed family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species to Japan, distributed from the Miyako Islands to the Yaeyama Islands. It grows in sunny open fields and on coastal rocks; it is a vine with stems reaching several meters in length. The leaves are ovate to ovate-elliptic, with entire margins, and are arranged in opposite pairs. The petioles are 1-2 cm long, and there is a pair of leaf-like stipules at the base. It produces racemose inflorescences in the leaf axils almost year-round, bearing yellowish-purple flowers. The fruit is a lanceolate-oblong capsule. This species is well known as a food plant for the Chestnut tiger (Parantica sita).
