The "Ryukyu-hikino-kasa" (Ranunculus ternatus var. lutchuensis) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and distributed in the northern part of Okinawa Island, Iejima Island, Sesoko Island, Tokunoshima Island, and Okinoerabu Island in the Nansei Islands. It grows in low-lying wastelands and wild fields, reaching a height of 15 to 30 cm. The basal leaves are trifoliate or simple with large teeth on the margins, and the leaf stalks are 2 to 5 cm long. The cauline leaves are trifoliate. From January to March, it produces flower scapes and yellow flowers. The fruit is broad elliptic achenes. The Japanese name comes from the resemblance of the flower to a frog's umbrella. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
