わが国の奄美大島から沖縄県にかけて分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１〜３メートルになります。葉は披針状長楕円形で先端が尖り、互生します。また葉には光沢があり、低い鋸歯があります。雌雄異株です。１月から５月ごろ、葉の表面の真ん中に淡い緑色の４弁花を咲かせます。果実は直径５〜６ミリの液果で、紫黒色に熟します。

ミズキ科ハナイカダ属の落葉低木で、学名は Helwingia japonica ssp. liukiuensis。英名は Ryukyu helwingia。

"Ryukyu helwingia" (Helwingia japonica ssp. liukiuensis) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to southward from the Amami Island to the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. This tree frows in mountains and it can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are lanceolate-oblong with acute tips, and arranged in alternate. They are glossy and have low toothed edges. It is dioecious. The pale green, four-petaled flowers bloom on the center of midribs from January to May. The fruits are berries 5-6 mm across, and ripen into purple-black.
