The "Ryukyu-kon-terigi" (Hydrangea liukiuensis) belongs to Hydrangeaceae (the Hydrangea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to Okinawa Island in Japan's Okinawa Islands. It grows in mountainous forests and along forest edges, reaching a height of 1 to 2 m. The trunk branches profusely partway up, spreading reddish-brown twigs. The leaves are oblong to obovate-lanceolate, with serrated margins, and are arranged in opposite pairs. From around April to June, it produces inflorescences at the tips of its branches, bearing small white flowers. The flowers lack ornamental flowers and are small, hermaphroditic. The fruit is an elliptical capsule. It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
