わが国のトカラ列島以南の南西諸島、それに台湾に分布しています。石灰岩地域の低地から山地に生え、高さは２〜５メートルになります。樹皮は灰紫色で艶があります。葉は広楕円形で、縁には鋸歯があり、互生またはやや対生します。４月から６月ごろ、葉腋に淡緑色の花を咲かせます。花柱の先が４裂するのが多いのが特徴です。果実は球形の核果で、黒色に熟します。台湾華語では「小葉鼠李」と呼ばれます。

クロウメモドキ科クロウメモドキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhamnus liukiuensis (syn. Rhamnus davurica var. liukiuensis)。英名は Little-leaf buckthorn。

The Little-leaf buckthorn (Rhamnus liukiuensis) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed in the Nansei Islands south of the Tokara Islands in Japan, as well as in Taiwan. It grows in lowland to mountainous areas of limestone regions and reaches a height of 2 to 5 m. The bark is grayish-purple and glossy. The leaves are broadly elliptical with serrated margins and are arranged alternately or slightly opposite. From around April to June, pale green flowers bloom in the leaf axils. A characteristic feature is that the tip of the style is often four-lobed. The fruit is a spherical drupe that ripens to black. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "小葉鼠李".
