The "Ryu-bintai-modoki" (Ptisana boninensis) belongs to the family Marattiaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is endemic to Japan's Ogasawara Islands and Northern Iwo Jima. It grows on forest floors in valleys and along streams, reaching heights of 150 to 200 cm. The leaves are large, bipinnate compound leaves, the pinnules are linear-lanceolate, with pointed tips and serrated margins. The leaves are leathery and green. The stipes are green, bearing scales at the base. Additionally, brownish-red scales are present at the bases of the lateral pinna and pinnule. The sorus are arranged in two rows on either side of the lateral veins of the pinna and are elliptical in shape.
