わが国の本州、福島・新潟県以南から四国、九州に分布しています。日当たりの良い丘陵や山地に生え、高さは４０〜８０センチになります。葉はふつう３裂して、縁には粗い鋸歯があります。表面には細毛が疎らに生え、裏面は灰白色の毛に被われています。１０月から１１月ごろ、白色の頭花を咲かせます。全体に竜脳（りゅうのう）に似た香りがあります。

キク科キク属の多年草で、学名は Chrysanthemum japonicum。英名はありません。

"Ryunou-giku" (Chrysanthemum japonicum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native southward from Fukushima-Niigata prefecture to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This herb grows in sunny hills or mountains, and can reach 40-80 cm in height. The leaves are usually trilobate with coarse serrate edges. The leaves bear sparse fine hairs on adverse sides and they are covered with grayish-white hairs on abaxial sides. The white flower-heads bloom from October to November. The whole plant has a borneol-like aroma.
