The Coelogyne lactea belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed in Southeast Asia, including Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It grows in mountainous areas at an altitude of about 1100 m, epiphytic on trees, and reaches a height of about 30 cm. The pseudobulbs are ovate to elliptic, with two narrow, elliptic leaves with pointed tips. In winter, it extends an erect, 20 cm long scape and blooms fragrant white flowers. A characteristic feature is that part of the labellum turns yellowish brown.
