地中海の東部沿岸から西アジアが原産の「シクラメン・ペルシクム」から改良された園芸品種です。夏には落葉して休眠します。和名は、花びらが反り返って咲くところから「かがりびばな（篝火花）」と呼ばれます。また、放し飼いの豚が「シクラメン」の球根を食べてしまうことから、別名で「ぶたのまんじゅう（豚の饅頭）」とも呼ばれます。
また、わが国でも屋外栽培が可能な、小型の耐寒性品種は「ガーデンシクラメン」と呼ばれます。オランダのＦ１ミニメイトが元になってますが、埼玉県の田島嶽氏が選抜生産し、１９９６年に初めて「ガーデンシクラメン｝の名で販売されました。現在では、耐寒性のあるミニシクラメンを「ガーデンシクラメン」と呼んでいます。

サクラソウ科シクラメン属の多年草で、学名は Cyclamen persicum cv.。英名は Cyclamen、Florists' cyclamen。

The Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum cv.) belongs to Primulaceae (the Primrose family). It is a perennial herb that has been bred from Cyclamen percicum which is native to the coastal area of the Mediterranean Sea and West Asia. The terrestrial is blighted and diapause in summer. It is also called "Sow bread", because of free-range pigs eat cyclamen bulbs. In addition, small cold-resistant varieties that can be cultivated outdoors in Japan are called "Garden cyclamen". It is based on the F1 Mini-mate variety from the Netherlands, but was selected and produced by Mr. Takeshi Tajima of Saitama Prefecture, and was first sold under the name of "Garden cyclamen" in 1996. Today, the cold-resistant mini cyclamen is called "Garden cyclamen".
