カナダの東部からアメリカの中・東部に分布しています。温帯地域の乾燥した林から湿った林に生え、高さは６０センチほどになります。茎は直立し、ふつう分枝しません。葉は掌状複葉で、５～７個の裂片に分かれ、３０センチほどの長い葉柄があります。４月から６月にかけて、花茎を伸ばして、淡い赤紫色から淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠は直径２．５～４センチで、５弁花です。果実は蒴果で、中央のくちばしのような長い柱が特徴です。

The Wild geranium (Geranium maculatum) belongs to Geraniaceae (the Geranium family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from eastern Canada to central and eastern United States. It grows in dry to moist forests in temperate regions and is about 60 cm tall. The stem is erect and usually unbranched. The leaves are palmately compound, divided into 5 to 7 lobes, and have a long petiole about 30 cm long. The corolla is 2.5 to 4 cm in diameter and has five petals. The fruit is a capsule with a long, beak-like central column.
