ヨーロッパからアジアの西部に分布しています。高山に生え、マウンドを形成して、５０センチほどの高さになります。葉は濃い緑色で、掌状に裂けます。秋には黄色や橙色、褐色に紅葉します。５月から６月ごろ、濃いピンク色の５弁花を咲かせます。園芸品種も多く、白色や淡いピンク色の花色の品種もあります。和名では、「あけぼのふうろ（曙風露）」とも呼ばれます。写真下は、園芸品種の「アルブム（cv. Album）」。

フウロソウ科フウロソウ属の多年草で、学名は Geranium sanguineum。英名は Bloody cranesbill。

The Bloody cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum) belongs to Geraniaceae (the Geranium family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and western Asia. This herb grows in high mountain ranges, forms mound and can reach about 50 cm in height. The leaves are dark green and divided into partites palmately. They turn yellow, orange or brown in fall. The flowers are dark pink, five-petaled and bloom from May to June. There are many flower-colored cultivers. The bottom photo is a cutivar 'Album'.
