ヒマラヤ山麓から中国西部が原産です。森や渓谷、やぶなどに生え、長さは５〜１０メートルになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、卵形から楕円形の小葉が５〜７個つきます。５月から８月ごろ、芳香のある白い花を咲かせます。花は食用や香りづけ、ジャスミンティなどに利用されます。また花の精油は、さまざまな食品の香りづけに使われます。和名では「しろもっこう（白木香）」と呼ばれます。

モクセイ科ソケイ属の落葉蔓性木本で、学名は Jasminum officinale。英名は Common jasmine。

The Common jasmine (Jasminum officinale) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a deciduous woody vine that is native to piedmonts of the Himalayas and West China. This vine grows in forests, valleys or thickets, and can reach 5-10 m long. The leaves are impari-pinnate with 5-7 ovate to elliptic leaflets. The fragrant white flowers bloom from May to August. They are eaten or used flavor or scent tea. An essential oil from the flowers is used as a flavoring agent in various foods.
