Winter daphne (Daphne odora) belongs to the Thymelaeaceae (the Akia family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to China. This tree was introduced into Japan in Muromachi Era (about 550 years ago). The flowers come in early spring, February to March, and the sepals are colored magenta outside and white inside. They have been used for gargle. This tree is dioecism, though the male plant only presents in Japan.
