群馬県と福島・新潟・長野の県境の山地にだけ分布しています。岩場の草地などに生え、高さは1メートルほどになります。「おにあざみ」とよく似ていますが、根生葉の切れ込みが深いのが特徴です。茎には白い軟毛が密生し、葉には鋭い棘が生えています。7月から8月ごろ、大きな頭花を項垂れるように咲かせます。花は紅紫色です。 
キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium okamotoi。英名はありません。 
"Joshu-oni-azami" (Cirsium okamotoi) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the prefecture's borders between Gumma and Fukushima, Niigata and Nagano prefecture in Japan. This herb grows in montane stony grasslands and it can reach about 1 m in height. It is similar to "Oni-azami" (Cirsium borealinipponense), though it has characteristic of deep notched basal leaves. The stems are covered with dense white wooly hairs and the leaves bear acute spines. The magenta large flower-heads are nodding and bloom from July to August.
