The Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) belongs to the family Elaeocarpaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the Bengal region of India to Nepal, and then to Southeast Asia and northern Australia. It grows scattered in tropical rainforests, and is 15 to 25 m tall. The leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, dark green, pointed at the tip, and have serrated edges. From March to September, it produces racemes of bell-shaped flowers that are greenish white or white in color, at the axils of fallen leaves. The fruit is a spherical drupe that ripens blue. Dried fruit is an essential item in Hinduism, and Shiva (known in Japan as Fudo Myoo or Daikokuten) is often depicted wearing several of these prayer beads.
