マレーシアのニコバル諸島が原産です。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは８メートルほど、胸高直径は１４センチほどになります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で対生し、光沢があります。花は白っぽい黄桃色の筒状花で、先端が５裂します。果実は直径９ミリほどの液果で、赤紫色に熟します。葉は皮膚病の治療や傷口の洗浄に用いられ、赤い染料の原料としても使われます。

アカネ科ボチョウジ属の常緑低木で、学名は Psychotria viridiflora。英名はありません。

The Psychotria viridiflora belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Nicobar Islands in Malaysia. It grows in tropical rainforests and is about 8 m tall with a dbh (diameter at breast height) of 14 cm. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, opposite, and glossy. The flowers are whitish yellowish-pink tubular flowers with five lobes at the tip. The berry is a berry about 9 mm in diameter that ripens to a reddish purple color. The leaves are used to treat skin diseases and to wash wounds, and are also used to make red dye.
