わが国の固有種で、富士山の周辺だけに分布しています。日当たりの良い林縁などに生え、高さは５〜６メートルになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、楕円形から卵状長楕円形の小葉が４〜９対つきます。縁には鋭い鋸歯があります。５月から６月ごろ、直径５〜６センチの淡紅色の花を咲かせます。花後に棘の多い果実をつけますが、焼酎漬けにして薬用にされることもあるそうです。名前は、枝に棘が多く、葉が「さんしょう」に似ていることから。山梨県山中湖村の「村の花」です。

バラ科バラ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Rosa hirtula。英名はありません。

"Sansho-bara" (Rosa hirtula) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall decidous tree that is endemic species of Japan and distributed mostly around Mount Fuji. This tree grows in sunny outskirt of forests and can reach 5-6 m in height. The leaves are pari-pinnate compound with 4-9 pairs of elliptic to ovate-oblong leaflets. The leaflet has acute toothed edge. The pale pink-rose 5-6 cm across come in May and June. The fruits have many spines and used as medicated liquor. The Japanese name "Sansho-bara" (Japanese pepper rose - literally translated) is derived from the Japanese pepper-like leaf.
