The Puerto Rico palmetto (Sabal causiarum) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It is a fan palm and grows up to 10 m tall and 35-70 cm in daimeter. The plants have 20-30 leaves, each with 60-120 leaflets. The inflorescences are branched, arching or pendulous, bear globose, black fruit. The leaves are used in the manufacture of "straw" hats.
