サガリバナ科サガリバナ属の常緑高木で、学名は Barringtonia racemosa。英名は Common putat。
The Common putat (Barringtonia racemosa) belongs to Lecythidaceae (the Brazil nut family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from the Ryukyu islands in Japan to Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India and Polynesia. This tree grow along the coasts and can reach about 20 m in height. The leaves are about 40 cm long with fine toothed edges. The long racemes droop down and the pale yellowish-white, four-petaled flowers bloom at night from June to July. The flowers have conspicuous, long, white tufted stames though they fall in the morning. The seeds contain fish poison and used for fishing. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "水茄苳".
