わが国の南西諸島から台湾、東南アジア、インドそれにポリネシアに広く分布しています。海岸の近くに生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。葉は長さ４０センチほどあり、縁に小さな鋸歯があります。６月から７月ごろ、長い総状花序を下垂させて、夜に淡い黄白色の４弁花を咲かせます。長くて白い房状の雄しべが目立ちますが、朝には落花してしまいます。果実の種子には魚毒が含まれ、漁に使用されるそうです。台湾華語では「水茄苳」と呼ばれます。 |

The Common putat (Barringtonia racemosa) belongs to Lecythidaceae (the Brazil nut family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from the Ryukyu islands in Japan to Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India and Polynesia. This tree grow along the coasts and can reach about 20 m in height. The leaves are about 40 cm long with fine toothed edges. The long racemes droop down and the pale yellowish-white, four-petaled flowers bloom at night from June to July. The flowers have conspicuous, long, white tufted stames though they fall in the morning. The seeds contain fish poison and used for fishing. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "水茄苳". |
