わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山地の沢沿いなど湿り気のあるところに生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は薄くて、羽状に深く切れ込みます。６月から８月ごろ、茎の先の散房花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。舌状花は７〜１３個ほどあります。花後、果実の冠毛がそのままついているので「ぼろぎく（襤褸菊）」とも呼ばれます。

キク科キオン属の多年草で、学名は Senecio nikoensis。英名はありません。

"Sawa-giku" (Senecio nikoensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in wet places along mountain streams and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are thin and divided into pinnately. The corymbs are borne on the terminal stems and bloom yellow flowers from June to August. The flower-head has 7-13 ray flowers. It is also called "Boro-giku" because it still has the pappus of the fruit after flowering.
