わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに台湾や朝鮮半島に分布しています。日当たりの良い酸性の湿原に生え、高さは２０センチほどになります。地下茎を伸ばして、次の年の球根を形成します。７月から８月ごろ、茎の先に白い花を数個咲かせます。花弁は上に２個、下に１個ありますが、下の花弁は、白サギが翼を広げたかたちに見えます。

ラン科ミズトンボ属の多年草で、学名は Habenaria radiata。英名は Egret flower。

The Egret flower (Habenaria radiata) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in sunny and acidic marshes and can reach up to 20 cm in height. It extends the rhizome to form the bulbs of the next year. From July to August, several white flowers come on the tip of the stem. There are two petals on the top and one on the bottom, but the petals on the bottom look like a egret with its wings spread.
