北アメリカおよび南アメリカが原産です。今では、池沼の鑑賞用の水生植物として広く利用されています。またアメリカやオーストラリアでは、水田に最も多く見られる雑草となっています。高さは５０〜９０センチになります。１０月から４月ごろ、白い花を咲かせます。花の中心部には赤紫色の斑点が入ります。和名では「たいりんおもだか（大輪面高）」と呼ばれています。

オモダカ科オモダカ属の多年草で、学名は Sagittaria montevidensis。英名は Arrowhead、California arrowhead。

The Arrowhead (Sagittaria montevidensis) belongs to Alismataceae (the Water-plantain family). It is a perennial herb that is native to North and South America. This herb is widely used for an ornamental hydrophyte nowadays. Though it is also a lowland weed in the United States and Australia. This herb can reach 50-90 cm in height. The white flowers come in October to April. The flower has magenta mottles in center.
