The Portia tree (Thespesia populnea) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from the Ryukyu Islands in Japan to Taiwan, tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands and India. This tree grows in coastwise forests and can reach 5-10 m in height. The leaves are heart-shaped and alternate with elongate acute tips. The large yellow flowers bloom on the terminal leaf-axiles in summer. They last one day and turn magenta in evening. The fruits are capsules and don't split open. They drop whole when mature. The fruits are used for the raw materials of yellow dye. The timber is very hard, strong and used for furniture and ship timber. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "繖楊".
