The "Saigoku-beni-shida" (Dryopteris championii) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Miyagi Prefecture and westwards of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and central and eastern China. It grows in the forests of mountainous areas and is 30 to 60 cm tall. The leaves are bipinnate compound, green, glossy and thick, with a soft leathery texture. The leaf stalk base is densely covered with reddish brown to dark brown scales. The base of the pinnules is auriculate. The sorus is located between the midrib and the margin of the pinnule, or slightly closer to the margin. In Taiwanese, it is called "闊鱗鱗毛蕨", and in Chinese, it is called "闊鱗鱗毛蕨" (kuo lin lin mao jue).
