アフリカ・タンザニアの北東部、ウサンバラ山地から海岸平野に分布しています。雨林の岩上や樹幹などに着生して、ロゼットを形成、ときに匍匐します。葉は濃緑色の楕円形で、縁には鋸歯があります。花は青紫色で、大きな集散花序を形成します。本種は、現在までに作出された園芸品種のほとんどの交配親となっています。

イワタバコ科セントポーリア属の多年草で、学名は Saintpaulia ionantha。英名はありません。

The Saintpaulia ionantha belongs to Gesneriaceae (the African violet family). It is a perennial herbacious plant that is endemic to the Usambara Mountains and the coastal plain in the northeastern part of Tanzania. This is an epiphyte that grows on rocks or tree trunks in rainforests and grows as a rosette or sometimes as a trailer. Leaves are dark green, elliptic with toothed edges. Flowers are bluish-purple and tend to grow in large cymes. This species is the breeding parent for most of the cultivars produced to date.
