アフリカ西部の熱帯地方に分布しています。柱サボテンに似て低木状になり、高さは１．８メートルほどになります。茎には３〜４稜があり、稜の上には棘とへら状の葉がつきます。また灰白緑色のまだら模様がありますが、赤色や白色の模様の品種もあります。わが国へは大正時代に導入されました。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Euphorbia trigona。英名は African milk tree。

The African milk tree (Euphorbia trigona) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed tropical West Africa. This succulent is fruticose, looks like a columnar cactus and can reach 1.8 m in height. Stems are middle green with pale grayish-green patches and 3-4 angled. Spatulate leaves and spines are on the edges. Some varieties have red or white mottling. It was introduced into Japan in the days of Taisho Era (about 80 years ago).
