The Japanese cleyera (Cleyera japonica) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Ibaraki prefecture in Honshu south to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, Taiwan and China. The trunk is upright and can reach 8-10 m in height. The leaves are narrow oblong or ovate-oblong, alternating and glossy leathery. From June to July, small white five-petaled flowers come on the axils. The Japanese name comes from "Sakaeki", which means that it always looks lush, or "Sakahigi", which means the border tree of the land where God calms down.
