わが国の奄美諸島以南から熱帯アジア、ポリネシアそれにアフリカに分布しています。海岸に生え、高さは５〜１５メートルになります。幹の下部には板状の仮根が発達します。葉は楕円形から卵状楕円形で互生し、裏面には鱗状毛が密生します。雌雄同株で、５月から７月ごろ、小さな汚黄色の花を咲かせます。果実は堅果で、表面に竜骨状の稜があります。名前は、ジャケツイバラ科の「すおう」のように材が紅色の染料に使われたことから。

アオギリ科サキシマスオウノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Heritiera littoralis。英名は Looking-glass tree。

The Looking-glass tree (Heritiera littoralis) belongs to the family Sterculiaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the Amami Islands in Japan south to tropical Asia, Polynesia and Africa. This tree grows on the coast and up to a height of 5-15 m. The buttress roots develop at the bottom of the trunk. The leaves are alternate, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, and covered with dense scaly hairs on the reverse side. It is monoecious and produces small dirty yellow flowers from May to July. The fruits are nuts and have a keel-like ridges on the surface. The Japanese name is that the wood was used for the red dye like "Sappan wood" (Caesalpinia sappan) of the family Caesalpiniaceae.
