メキシコのオアハカ州のシエラ・マサテカの特産です。標高３００〜１８００メートルの雲霧林や熱帯常緑樹林に生え、高さは１メートル以上になります。葉は卵形で鋸歯があり、先端が尖ります。葉には幻覚を誘発するオピオイドに似た化合物が含まれます。１０月から５月ごろ、紫色の萼片のある白色の花が咲きます。

シソ科アキギリ属の多年草で、学名は Salvia divinorum。英名は Sage of the diviners。

The Sage of the diviners (Salvia divinorum) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to the Sierra Mazateca in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. This herb grows in cloud forest and tropical evergreen forest at elevations from 300 -1800 m, and up to over a meter high. The leaves are ovate and serrated with acute tips. The leaves contain opioid-like compounds that induce hallucinations. The white flowers with violet calyxes bloom from October to May.
