The Alpine willow (Salix hegetschweileri) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a shrub that is distributed in Europe. It grows in moist, rocky, gravelly areas and along the banks of streams at elevations between 1500 and 2200 m, and is 0.5 to 3 m tall. The leaves are ovate, with the greatest width above the middle. The leaves are hairless, slightly serrated, and obtuse, with a shiny green surface and a blue-green underside. The katkin has a short stalk. The specific epithet is in honor of the Swiss physician, botanist, and politician Johannes Jacob Hegetschweiler (1789-1839).
