アメリカの東部から中南部、コネチカット州からフロリダ州、カンザス・テキサス州にかけて分布しています。明るい林内や潅木帯などに生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。根生葉は長さ２０センチほどで深裂します。４月から６月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして、数段の輪状花序にふじ色から青色の唇形花を咲かせます。英名は、葉のかたちが竪琴（Lyre）に似ていることから。

シソ科アキギリ属の多年草で、学名は Salvia lyrata。英名は Lyre-leaved sage。

The lyre-leaved sage (Salvia lyrata) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from eastern part to midsouthern part of the United States, from Connecticut to Florida, Kansas and Texas. Thsi herb grows in open forests and scrubs and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The basal leaves are about 20 cm long and split deeply. The flower stalks are extended and the mauve to blue lip-shaped flowers bloom in the verticillasters from April to June. The common name is derived from the shape of the leaves resembles a lyre.
