メキシコが原産です。チワワ州から南のオアハカ州にかけて分布しています。乾燥した山地に生え、高さは1.8メートルほどになります。葉は卵形で緑色、下面には目立つ脈があります。秋から春にかけて、青紫色の花を咲かせます。葉には甘い芳香があり、ハーブティーや解熱剤として使われています。
シソ科アキギリ属の小低木で、学名は Salvia melissodora。英名は Grape-scented sage。
The Grape-scented sage (Salvia melissodora) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial shrub that is native to Mexico and distributed southward from Chihuahua south to Oaxaca. This shrub grows in arid mountains and can reach 1.8 m in height. The leaves are ovate, mid-green with prominent veins on the lower surface. The violet-blue flowers bloom fall to spring. The leaves have sweetly fragrant and have been used as a tea and a medicine for reduction of fever.
