メキシコの中部が原産です。林縁の辺りや明るい林などに生え、高さは１．５〜３．６メートルになります。葉は卵形で対生、長い葉柄があります。葉の形状には、大きな変異があります。９月から１１月にかけて、長い穂状花序に濃い紫色の蝶形花を咲かせます。サルビア・メキシカーナには、強い芳香がありません。

シソ科アキギリ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Salvia mexicana。英名は Mexican sage。

The Mexican sage (Salvia mexicana) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to central Mexico. This shrub grows near forest edges and in open woods, and can reach 1.5-3.6 m in height. The leaves are ovate, opposite with long petioles and highly variable in leaf form. The deep purple labiate flowers bloom in the long spikes from September to November. Mexican sage does not have a strong scent.
