メキシコの中部に分布しています。乾燥した森林に生え、高さは３０〜８０センチになります。葉は三角形でミスルトゥーグリーン（ヤドリギのような緑色）、対生します。６月から１０月ごろ、穂状花序をだし、２裂した鮮やかな青色の花を咲かせます。花はハチドリやチョウなどの受粉媒介者にとって魅力的です。この植物は、１８３８年に園芸に導入されました。写真は園芸品種の「パティオ・ダークブルー（cv. Patio Dark Blue）」。コンパクトな直立した茎に、大きなダークブルーの花を咲かせます。

The Gentian sage (Salvia patens) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in central Mexico. It grows in dry forests and is 30-80 cm tall. It produces spikes of bright blue flowers with two lobes from June to October. The flowers are attractive to pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. This plant was introduced to horticulture in 1838. The photo shows the garden variety 'Patio Dark Blue'. It produces large dark blue flowers on compact upright stems.
